2012 ICOL Workshops


The International Conference on Outdoor Leadership offers a variety of presentation and learning opportunities.  Each different type of workshop or presentation serves a specific function within the event.  
 

 
Pre-Conference workshops dig deeper into outdoor leadership issues and topics.  Workshops can be classroom or field based and can offer external certificates or be related to the WEA core competency curriculum components.

Workshop Tracks are designed to offer continuing education for outdoor leadership professionals in each of the WEA core competencies.  - Presentation Proposals Deadline Extended to January 6
Presentations by leading peer professionals provides opportunities to expand personal knowledge base and stay up to date with the most recent trends and curriculum implementation. 

Outdoor Leadershp Research Symposium (OLRS) - Abstracts Due Nov 15
The 4th annual Outdoor Leadershp Research Symposium provides a forum for practitioners and scholars to share recent and on-going research related to outdoor leadership.  The goal of the symposium is to help promote the development of evididence-based practice in the field of outdoor leadership. Accepted abstracts will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education & Leadership.  
 

Outdoor Leadership Program Symposium (OLPS) - Abstracts Due Nov 5
The 2nd annual Outdoor Leadership Program Symposium provides a forum for field and administrative practitioners to share best practices related to developing and maintaining excellent outdoor leadership training programs.  The OLPS provides an opportunity for non-competency based presentations to be shared through a series of short presentations.  The presentations highlight specific components of a particular program that other administrators can incorporate into their programs.  
 


Student Presentations - Submissions Due December 2, 2011
For the students and by the students, Student Presentations function as a valuable platform for upcoming outdoor professionals to gain real conference presentation experience.  This 2nd annual event provides an opportunity for undergraduate and first time graduate students to obtain critical experience presenting in a formal setting and to present on topics that matter to their peers.

Student Presentations will mimic the format, expectations and outcomes of professional presentations and will be an excellent learning experience for both the presenters, mentors, and audience members.  Being a student presenter is a fantastic stepping stone for students who wish to pursue a career in the outdoor leadership field and to engage as professional presenters in the future!



Student Presentation Proposal Details:
  • Each student presenter will be given a 45 minute time frame to present on the topic of their choice.
  • Students must submit a presentation proposal which will be used to determine which students will be selected to present at the 2012 conference
  • Proposals are due December 2, 2011
  • Presenters must register by the early registration deadline (December 16, 2011) or their spot will be given to another student
  • Presenters are to submit their content to the Special Events Committee by january 17th
  • Presenters are expected to submit content to the Conference Proceedings after the conference by the designated deadline
  • Student presenters must choose a professional mentor who will serve as an advisor for the student's presentation

Professional Mentor Details:
  • A student may chose anyone within the outdoor field to be their professional mentor
  • If the student does not know anyone who fits the criteria of a professional mentor, they can contact the WEA to be set up with further options of professional mentors that would be willing to help
  • A mentor must be chosen prior to submitting a presentation submission form
  • It will be the mentor's responsibility to be the main source of support for their student presenter.
  • Mentors are responsible for ensuring:
    • The student presentation is of conference quality
    • The student presenter is fully prepared (and practiced) prior to the event
    • Content provided in slide shows and conference proceedings is accurate and cited properly prior to use/submission
  • Mentors are not required to be in attendance at the confference or at the presentation
