Northern Michigan University has been a Wilderness Education Association Affiliate since 1994-1995. Northern Michigan University offers a Baccalaureate degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management and the WEA 18 point curriculum is incorporated into the curriculum in several ways. The WEA Stewardship course (RE 356) is a required course in the major and an elective for minors; it is also open to non-majors and minors when there is space available. Appropriate portions of the WEA 18 point curriculum is taught in our Outdoor Living Skills class (RE 155). This course is a required course in the major and in all minors; it is also an elective course open to any student at the University. Since our Affiliation, we have taught 15 WEA Steward courses, three NSP courses and one WEA Workshop. We have also provided credit for some of our students who have attended Steward, NSP or PSC courses offered through Western Illinois University, Oklahoma State University and Indiana University. The WEA Stewardship Courses are usually taught in May in the Upper Peninsula but we have recently added a winter Stewardship course that travels to Canada and offers an ice climbing component. Our students regularly attend the WEA National Conference and have been presenters at several of these Conferences.
