Colorado State University - Pueblo is an affiliate institution with the Wilderness Education Association that offers the Outdoor Leadership certificate.  We require students to completed the following Recreation courses to become a WEA certified outdoor leader.  Each student must: Participate in 3 Orientations courses, lead at least 2 Orientations courses, complete REC 270 & 370 (Outdoor Leadership 1&2), Complete REC 360 (Outdoor Education) & complete Wilderness First Responder.
Our program at Colorado State University-Pueblo includes a collaborative relationship between theExperiential Learning Center  and the Department of Exercise Science Health Promotion and Recreation.  Together, each program supports the learning that aspiring outdoor leaders choose.  The Orientation Courses consist of continuous wilderness experiences for a duration of  seven to ten days.
  • Mountain Orientation-Learning basic mountaineering skills in teh backcountry
  • Winter Orientation-Backcountry hut trip focused on winter travel skills, backcountry awareness and winter survival.
  • Desert Orientation-Desert backpacking trip focused on desert ecology, cultural awareness and basic survival skills
  • Canyon Orientation-Learning canyoneering skills while backpacking, hiking, camping, canoeing and mountain biking
