Biography

Paul has worked in the outdoor industry since 1978 as a professional outdoor guide, instructor, staff trainer, program manager, outdoor program designer and consultant (including 22 years with Outward Bound). His work led him to develop site management, outcome, and competency theories and other material tested and presented during the workshop. His risk management models are used effectively by colleges, universities, camps, and outfitters nationwide.

Paul’s professional writing includes the Art & Technique of Wilderness Medicine, the Wilderness Medicine Handbook, Case Studies in Wilderness Medicine, Effective Outdoor Program Design & Management, the Site Management Handbook, the Site Management Trainer’s Manual, and numerous articles on wilderness medicine and risk management. Paul is the Director of the Wilderness Medicine Training Center (WMTC is a leader in innovative and practical instruction in wilderness medicine). He continues to teach and work in the outdoors.
