Job Description

The Outdoor Academy
Resident/Outdoor Leader Internship Position

The Resident/Outdoor Educator Internship position provides the intern a working knowledge of outdoor leadership and experiential education. The position allows the intern to develop understanding of the academic, residential, and wilderness aspects of The Outdoor Academy. The opportunity would be valuable for outdoor educators interested in working in a school setting or individuals interested in working in an innovative educational setting. Eagle’s Nest Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to experiential education for young people that promotes the natural world and the betterment of human character. Eagle’s Nest sponsors two programs: Eagle’s Nest Camp, a co-ed summer camp for children ages 6-17, and The Outdoor Academy, a semester program for 10th grade students from across the country. The Outdoor Academy incorporates a college preparatory curriculum with environmental education, wilderness leadership, unique arts offerings, and regional studies. Students from public and private schools apply to attend our community-centered program in the mountains of North Carolina for one semester of their 10th grade year.

POSITION AVAILABLE: Residential Outdoor Educator Internship

CONTRACT DATES: August 11, 2008 – Dec. 19, 2008 OR January 2, 2009 – May 15, 2009

RESPONSIBILITIES: Residents live with students in a dorm or cabin. As mentors they foster a safe, healthy, and responsible living environment. Residents also:

● Co-lead wilderness trips involving rock climbing, whitewater paddling, backpacking, and caving
● Coordinate weekend activity planning
● Facilitate weekend meal preparation
● Co-teaching an academic course is a possibility

Required Experience:

REQUIREMENTS:

● BS or BA degree
● Experience with young people in an outdoor setting
● Significant background/skills in climbing, canoeing, caving, or backpacking
● First Aid/CPR required; Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder preferred
● Academic skill(s): second language and/or math preferred
● Semester school or study-abroad experience at secondary or collegiate level preferred
