Education Job Description

Thompson Island Outward Bound (TIOB) is hiring qualified wilderness instructors to lead courses this summer season. We are looking for dedicated trip leaders who possess a great attitude, fantastic work ethic, strong communication skills and an enthusiastic personality. TIOB runs programs sailing and sea kayaking in Boston Harbor, and along the coast to Cape Ann and beyond. Our backpacking and canoeing programs are run out of Pike, New Hampshire (Haverhill area) near Mt. Moosilauke and explore the upper reaches of the Connecticut River and the northern White Mountains. Our programs include:

·         Connecting with Courage (12-14 year old girls)

·         Passages (12-14 year old boys)

·         Environmental Expeditions (13-17 year old boys and girls)

·         Intercept (an intervention trip for 14-17 year olds)

 Course elements include:

·         12-14 day Sail & High Ropes Course

·         14-22 day Canoe, Backpack & Rock Climbing

·         10 day backpack & Rock Climbing

·         12 day Sea Kayak & High Ropes Course

 

LEAD INSTRUCTOR

Qualifications:

Responsibilities:

·         Plan and lead wilderness expeditions for youth; inspire young people and change their outlook on life and their potential to be leaders in their communities

·         Maintain safety of the students in the field.

·         Teach program specific curriculum

·         Mentor assistant instructors & interns.

Requirements:

·         Competence in a wide range of outdoor skills and challenge course activities.

·         High standard of moral character and a desire to lead meaningful, challenging wilderness expeditions. 

·         A high level of comfort living out of a backpack for 2 weeks at a time- including modeling Leave No Trace and low-impact camping skills.

·         Knowledge of group dynamics and diversity issues.

·         Certified Wilderness First Responder or higher and CPR.

·         Strong desire to help teens develop in the outdoors.

·         Minimum age of 21

·         Understanding of Outward Bound philosophy and methodologies

Required Experience:

Wilderness Expedition/Trip Leading (including specific experience with sea kayaking, sailing, hiking, canoeing and challenge courses.)

WFA or Higher

Experience working with diverse youth popultions and co-leading activities.
