The International Registry of Outdoor Leaders (IROL) went live on March 1, 2010. The Wilderness Education Association has entered the first round of students and faculty to the IROL and is excited to enhance the professionalism of the outdoor leadership industry through this effort. The IROL provides a platform for individuals seeking outdoor leader status through Accredited institutions to build an online professional portfolio. Each individual completes a professional portfolio that highlights their accomplishments in each of the 6 core competencies. Upon completion, their portfolio is submitted to the accredited institution for review and approval. Ultimately the goal is to achieve Outdoor Leader status in the IROL and Outdoor Leadership Certification from the institution as accredited by the WEA. Once Outdoor Leader level is achieved, the IROL provides a format for logging field leadership experience and professional development via Continuing Education Units. The WEA believes that the creation of a formal platform for professionals in the industry to validate their work and experience is incredibly important as we the industry seeks recognition in the professional world.
For those individuals who do not yet have an active IROL portfolio, we have created a document that shows the structure of the Portfolio along with helpful descriptions. Reading the document should help individuals gain a better idea of what 'artifacts' and information they should begin gathering to upload into their portfolio. This document should be particularly helpful to current WEA Outdoor Leaders and Instructors who will be grandfathered into the IROL. When the membership of those individuals expires, they will be eligible to renew at the IROL membership level which will activate their portfolio and allow them to begin uploading their personal documents, field experiences and continuing education.
