Wilderness Instructor

Responsible for the care and mentoring of 8-12 adjudicated youth who were court ordered to participate in our Wilderness School. During this 31 day wilderness school program my responsibilities were to work effectively with youth in an outdoor environment in high stress, physically demanding activities in a back country wilderness setting. Teaching and mentoring these "at risk" youth in wilderness living and life skills. As I watched over and cared for the mental, emotional and physical safety of the youth I exemplified and offered healthy relational models for conflict resolution and genuine interaction while challenging the youth to grow. One of the best ways I found was to teach "Leave No Trace" ethics and principles and then use these as bridges to discuss the less obvious decision making paradigms that guide us. Additionally, our goals were accomplished by facilitating high and low ropes activities and through tailoring daily activities and conversations to meet the youth in their developmental process.
