WEA courses emphasize leadership training through theory and application of leadership and decision making. This emphasis along with the systematic evaluation of a students leadership abilities and judgment provides participants with unique training opportunities. It also provides potential employers with graduates who have an excellent understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. The Wilderness Education Workshop (WEW) is designed to provide students, adults, children, and professionals from any field with an opportunity to explore the basics of outdoor travel. Using the 18-point curriculum as a guide, each WEW is tailored to the individual groups needs and wants. Classes and activities move at the pace of the group. Frequently Asked Questions: WEA Service Crew What will my responsibilities entail? As a member of the Service Crew it is your responsibility to make sure the conference runs smoothly. Generally, Service Crew members assist with things like: helping run the registration table, selling WEA goods and merchandise, assisting vendors with set up and tear down, introducing presenters, collecting workshop evaluations, helping with the annual auction and raffle. How does my reimbursement work?Each Service Crew member must register and pay for registration, in full, prior to the conference start. (Early Registration Prices end December 15.) Your registration refund will be based on the number of hours that you work as submitted to the National Office by the Service Crew Coordinator, Mallory Rickbeil. Your organization's support and presence as a vendor/exhibitor is a unique opportunity to meet current and future outdoor leaders, outdoor program representatives, college and university representatives, guide service representatives and more. Booth Location/Visibility: All vendor booths will be set up in the main pavilion to ensure the highest amount of traffic flow from conference attendees. How to Become a WEA Affiliate

1. Submit a letter of intent to affiliate with the WEA that includes: a. Reasons for submission b. Description of target audience c. Marketing strategy d. How the WEA curriculum will be integrated into the program/institution (i.e. how well does the institutions mission match WEAs mission?) 2. 2008 will be the 21st annual WEA conference. The first being held in 1988 in Saranac Lake, NY. Since that time the conference has found its home in over 15 diverse locations across the country. This event creates a unique opportunity for furthered education through the use of workshops and presentations, as well as a chance for networking with other outdoor organizations and leaders.

The History of the WEA

Internationally recognized for his pioneering role in the development of wilderness education, Paul K. Petzoldt was the impetus behind the founding of the WEA along with Dr. Frank Lupton, Robert Christie and Charles Gregory, all leaders in their own right. These individuals shared a common vision concerning the development of outdoor leadership and the role of education in the preservation of this country’s wild land areas. Convinced that the survival of the American Wilderness and the safety of those seeking to enjoy it would require a massive educational effort, WEA founders envisioned a network of decentralized Affiliates teaching from a standard program, as rich in environmental decency as it was in leadership. The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and inspiring responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships. In 2005 the WEA was selected to be one of five providers of the Master Educator Course. Becoming a WEA Instructor

The basic steps to becoming a WEA instructor are split into two phases:

Phase One:

1.1 Become a Certified Outdoor Leader by successfully completing a WEA NSP or PSC and receive positive written feedback from the instructor.

1.2 Take the WEA Instructor Training Clinic. The ITC is a two day clinic held during pre-conference activities of several outdoor association conferences each year.

1.3 Complete an Apprenticeship at the level of course you desire to be an instructor* and receive positive written feedback from the lead instructor with recommendation to become a WEA Instructor.

Phase Two:

2.1 Submit a letter of application to the WEA Standards Committee (send to National Office)

2.2 Submit documentation of current WFR and CPR (minimum required medical certification)

2.3 Ensure that you have a current WEA membership.

Upon receipt of all of the above items, your application will be reviewed and you will be notified of a decision within three weeks.

*NSP Instructors are able to teach any WEA course format. WSP Instructors are restricted to instructing WSP's and WEW's

What is an Affiliate Membership? Affiliate membership denotes organizations and institutions that are recognized by the Wilderness Education Association to offer WEA courses. Affiliate membership is only available to those organizations and institutions that complete the Affiliate Applicaiton process and are approved by the Standards Committee. WEA affiliates have the opportunity to join the WEAs General Liability Insurance Policy for coverage of their WEA courses for an additional annual fee. Who are WEA Instructors:

WEA Instructors are professionals in the field of Outdoor Leadership, Education and Recreation. WEA Instructors are often College/University Professors or collegiate outing program coordinators, professional guides, outdoor educators, staff directors of non-profit outdoor leadership organizations.

Why be a WEA Instructor:

With over 40 Affiliates around the country and internationally, the WEA provides an incredible network of organizations that WEA instructors can teach courses for. WEA Instructors have the ability to teach courses by freelancing for WEA Affiliates, as well as the ability to easily establish an Affiliate within the organizations that they currently work. The WEA's format offers Instructors a lot of flexibility to fit into established programs, often with little change.

Becoming a Master Educator Instructor

To become a Master Educator Instructor through the WEA enables you to instruct Master Educator Courses for the WEA. If you are a Master Educator Instructor for another provider authorized by the Center for Outdoor Ethics, please contact the National Office directly.

The basic format for attaining this Instructor Status is as follows:

1.1 Successfully complete a Leave No Trace Master Educator Course

1.2 Instruct a minimum of two Leave No Trace Trainer Courses

1.3 Apprentice a Leave No Trace Master Educator Course with an approved WEA Master Educator Course instructor and recieve positive written feedback with recomendation to become a Master Educator Instructor for the WEA.

1.4 Apply to the WEA Standards Committee for Instructor Staus (include medical certifications, letter of intent and documentation of all Trainer courses taught).
