On behalf of the Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education, the 2008 AORE Conference Host and Presentation Relations Committee are now accepting workshop proposals for the International Conference-A Climate for Change, October 30th to November 1st, 2008 in San Diego, CA! While the AORE Conference is loaded with keynotes, technical training and other events and activities, workshops are its foundation. Through them, attendees and presenters alike leave the conference with professional development and energy to delve deeper into their practice. Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act

My name is Brett Haverstick and I am a graduate student at the University of Idaho. I also intern/volunteer with the Friends of the Clearwater (FOC), a non-profit public lands advocacy group in Moscow. FOC has been working hard to promote and support NREPA for 15 years now, and with a more favorable Congress it is finally getting the just hearing it deserves.

Dr. Steve Spencer awarded Frank Lupton Service Award at 2007 National Conference

Dr. Steve Spencer, a Professor in the Recreation Administration Program at Western Kentucky University, was selected as the Frank Lupton Service Award recipient at the Wilderness Education Association (WEA) award ceremony during the National Conference on Outdoor Leadership held in Estes Park, Colorado on February 7-11, 2007.

The Frank Lupton Service Award is given to a member who has been active in the WEA for at least ten years, has contributed significantly to the success of the WEA, who does an outstanding job representing WEA, and has been recommended by at least three members of the organization.

Dr. Spencer currently serves as the Affiliate Representative to the association for WKU. His service to the association includes the Standards Committee, the Board of Trustees. He has presented educational workshops at the national conference every year since he became a member in 1990. He has written numerous articles for the conference proceedings and newsletter. Steve has donated his time and energy to support the association in its educational and fundraising efforts. When the association moved its National Office to Tennessee, Steve recruited WKU students to assist with the transition by helping move equipment, supplies, and files. Moreover, he has taught fifteen courses for the association utilizing the 18-Point Curriculum. As shown through these examples, Steve Spencer's service to the Wilderness Education Association has been invaluable during the past 16 years.

2007 Paul K. Petzold Award Recipient - Phil Powers

Each year the Wilderness Education Association(WEA) recognizes and acknowledges outstanding achievements in outdoor leadership with the Paul K. Petzoldt Award. The WEA was founded in 1977 by Paul Petzoldt, Frank Lupton, Robert Christie and Charles Gregory as a means to train outdoor leaders to safely lead and teach the public about appropriate use of wilderness areas. The WEA is comprised of over 40 organizational affiliates - primarily colleges and universities - that help to promote this mission. The 2007 recipient of the Paul K. Petzoldt award is Phil Powers, Executive Director of the American Alpine Club (AAC). Powers joined the AAC as executive director in May 2005. His extensive experience in the field of outdoor leadership includes seventeen years as a course leader, chief mountaineering instructor and development/partnerships director with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). The 2007 National Conference on Outdoor Leadership is revolutionizing the way we think of conference entertainment.

Conference attendees are placed into groups of six and will battle for honor, presige and prizes.

This event is open to all attendees of the 2007 National Conference on Outdoor Leadership. The action will begin following the opening remarks on Thursday, February 8, 2007 so plan on seeing old friends, meeting new people and having a great night!
