OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP TRAINING COURSE (OLTC)

The goal of the WEA Outdoor Leadership Training Course (OLTC) is to expose students to the WEA Educational Components and provide a model of WEA teaching styles. This is a great introductory course for students just entering the field of outdoor leadership or a first step in formalized learning for individuals who enjoy outdoor pursuits for personal recreation. This course, offered only by WEA organizational member programs, is an exposure to WEA practice in the field coupled with a deepening grasp of the knowledge and attitudes necessary in professional outdoor leadership. A typical college outdoor skills course, campus rec intro trip, or an outdoor skills overview course for the general public could include this curriculum. No experience is necessary to participate.

TRAINING:

The basic OLTC course is a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights of overnight experience where the WEA approach to outdoor leadership is modeled by the instructor. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion and a personalized assessment from the instructor for the next step in professional development. Course costs will vary by provider, location, and activities.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION:

The WEA Outdoor Leadership Training Course is NOT a certification program. Participants do not receive formal certification, but a certificate of completion. There is no renewal of this certificate – your next step is the Certified Outdoor Leader.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

The OLTC is a perfect way to begin the process of developing your skill set for outdoor leadership. Additional training from WEA providers and field experience are the gateway to a position as an outdoor leader.
