AWARDS AND SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS

Every year at the International Conference on Outdoor Leadership, the WEA gives several awards to qualified individuals who are making an impact in the field of outdoor education and leadership.

Paul K. Petzoldt Leadership Award

Nominated by the Board of Directors.

Criteria:

  • The individual has made significant contributions to the field of Outdoor Leadership.
  • The Individual has had outstanding influence within the profession.
  • The Individual is willing to travel to the International Conference on Outdoor Leadership to accept the award.
  • The Individual has knowledge of WEA and Paul Petzoldt's role in the outdoor industry.

 

Frank Lupton Service Award

Nominated by the Board of Directors.

Criteria:

  • The Member has been active with WEA for a minimum of ten years.
  • The Member does an outstanding job representing WEA
  • The Member has contributed significantly to the success of the WEA in a minimum of three specific ways. * Examples may include but are not limited to Volunteer Board and/or Committee Member, Affiliate Representative, Conference Presenter/Author, Fund Raising, Curriculum Development

 

WEA Certified Outdoor Educator (COE) Award

Nominated by committee chairs.

Criteria:

  • The COE has been an active member of WEA for a minimum of five years.
  • The COE has made positive contributions to the WEA curriculum, standards, operations, conferences, etc.
  • The COE does an outstanding job representing WEA.

 

WEA Organizational Member Award

Nominated by the National Office and Organizational Member Representative.

Criteria:

  • The Organizational Member has been active with WEA for a minimum of five years.
  • The Organizational Member representative has made positive contributions to WEA committees, curriculum, conferences, standards, operations, etc.
  • The Organizational Member does an outstanding job representing WEA.

 

WEA Student Leader Award

Nominated by the membership, reviewed and selected by the Special Events Committee.

Criteria:

  • The Student Leader is actively enrolled in the International Registry of Outdoor Leaders.
  • The Student Leader has contributed significantly to the success of the outdoor leadership within her or his Organization.
  • The Student Leader has benefited the WEA through volunteer service (conference, journal, committees, etc.)

 

Presidential Council

The Presidential Council is charged with cataloging the history of the Wilderness Education Association to maintain organizational memory. The Presidential Council also acts as a resource to the current President in times of needed council.

Scholarships

The WEA has two scholarships established to help support professional development. The Kitty Drury Scholarship for Instructor Development aims to support aspiring outdoor leaders by offsetting course costs associated with courses required for WEA certification; this fund was initially made in honor of WEA founding member Katharine "Kitty" Drury. The Pete Peterson Memorial Scholarship for Outdoor Leadership Development aims to assist leaders as they complete training through the WEA to advance themselves as outdoor educators.
